The school started as I, a mother and a teacher in the public education system, saw my son falling behind. There were a number of reason that he started to fall behind, but the bottom line was that I realized public education does not fit every child. Public education is a one size fits all. It works great for many kids! However, the students that struggle or are gifted tend to be overlooked. I wanted to hep my son get caught up in school, but couldn't see that happening being a full time teacher. I decided to homeschool him, but then worried about him socially. The wheels started turning, I started talking to other parents and the creation of Vernal Liberty Middle School came about.
Every parent is worried about their child, and wants the best for their child. I have had parents come to me asking about pushing their child further. We can do that. We are not bound by the state to keep the kids on the grade level their age assigns them. We test the students and find the perfect level. The students choose how hard they want to push themselves.
We've had other parents come to me worried about the environment in the middle schools. We are such a small school that behaviors such as swearing, gun violence, and smoking are nonexistent, or delt with quickly bringing the parents in to help solve the problem. We believe that children have the right to learn in an uplifting environment.
We've had other parents whose children have been bullied at their previous schools. We do not tolerate bullying, but also clearly define what bullying is, and what it is not. These students are still children that are in the throws of learning, not only math and reading skills, but social and emotional skills as well. We believe in teaching social skill to all the students. We teach them how to interact with each other.
Finally, with an increase of anxiety in children, we believe in a small group. We have at max a 1:20 teacher student ratio, but are often much lower than that. With a final goal of 45-60 students at a time, your child will become part of a family. We build bonding relationships where we know love and respect abound above all else. Yes, we can tease and laugh, but learn how to love and make sure that each other's feelings are of the most importance!
